The risk is real. Because we have seen it up close and personal and the above is a edited part of a real threat made to a NZ executive.
There are plenty of examples in our part of the world where executives by the very nature of the job that they do, are threatened. Are the threats real or simply actions and words from a disaffected person. Well that’s what needs to be figured out, either way it is appropriate to give the threat due consideration.
It is not a case of being no risk. And the old adage, well that’s why they get paid the big bucks, just doesn’t wash. People going about their job don’t deserve to be threatened and have that risk and concern extend to the family.
It is a reality though that on occasion that the people in big jobs making big decisions get some pretty alarming, disturbing and violent threats made against them and their families.

If we take a broad view of executives and consider them as business professionals, business owners, leaders and influential decisions makers, then recent times has shown us that all of these groups occasionally get threats made against them in their professional working career.
Practical examples are of people that sit within corporate boards and executive leadership teams that have made the difficult decisions of a restructure which has left a number of employees without a job. Decisions done for the good of the company, but this is of little consequence to the person who has lost their job.
There are plenty of examples of lawyers receiving threats for doing their job in defending a client. The client, whatever the crime is still entitled to a defence, yet we have cases of lawyers being exposed to extreme threats to themselves and the family.
Business relationships going bad with big financial losses is another common example we have seen requiring immediate investigative and protective security support.
Businesses that rub against environmental and activists groups are further examples. It’s democratic to protest but not to threaten and promote violence.
Investigate & Protective Security
When these threats occur there are two things that need to occur right now and often you will need to do them simultaneously.
The key thing is, you do need to act. In the absence of evidence to the contrary you should always consider the threat as real with the offending person having capability.
Start the investigation. This may well include informing the police immediately or you may have to take some time to gather the information so you can provide the police with the information that they need.
Provide an appropriate level of support and security to the person who has been threatened and their family. At the minor end of the scale this may simply be a supportive conversation, at the other end it may require the immediate uplift of the family and moving them to a safe house location. Both may require a residential security review.
